If you have ever struggled through a summer holiday in clinging, uncomfortable or low-quality swimwear, then you will understand the importance of finding a bikini or swimsuit that makes you feel your best.
I, for one, take my swimwear as seriously as I take my denim, which is to say very seriously. What I have come to realise is that, just like jeans, certain swimwear should be saved for specific scenarios. A statement string bikini might be ideal for lounging poolside but a poor choice when water sports are on the agenda. Likewise, if you are hoping to work on your tan, a high-coverage swimsuit probably will not leave you with the desired results.
While I will not divulge the number of bikinis I own (it is a lot), I will happily share the best styles I have found after plenty of trial and error. Below are my favourites, with tips on sizing, style, and the best, or worst, places to wear each one.
The one-and-done bikini
I own three bikinis from Triangl and, while all of them are strong contenders, it is the Sparkle Scoop set that I rarely travel without. You can choose from three different bottom styles offering different levels of coverage, and the material is thick enough to hold its own while playing mermaids in the pool. One note: I would size up at least once across the brand’s entire offering, as the pieces tend to run small and fit snugly. £99 at Triangl.
The statement bikini
A brand loved by Dua Lipa and by many of us at ELLE HQ, Oséree is the swimwear label to wear when you are not afraid to get noticed. I particularly love the Lumière Layered Bikini, which is far more supportive than it looks. The extra straps are all fully adjustable, the Lumière fabric glistens under the sun, and the orange and purple colourway stands out boldly. I would avoid water sports in this one, but I would happily wear it to work on my tan by the pool. £220 at Mytheresa.
The crinkle bikini
The go-to for flattering crinkle fabric, Hunza G is a brand that deserves all of its flowers. I have the style named Julia, which features a gold hoop at the bust and briefs that sit mid-waist. This might be the only bikini I trust to stay on during water sports, as it hugs the body and works hard to stay in place without feeling too tight. Note that all the brand’s pieces use a one-size design made to fit UK sizes 6 to 18. £195 at Hunza G.
The underwire bikini
Fruity Booty has had my heart for years. I first dabbled in the brand through its underwear before I caught wind of its swim offering, and I have been a fan ever since. For many of us, wired bras and bikinis can feel uncomfortable and unflattering, always digging in where we would rather they did not. So let me introduce an underwired bikini that sits comfortably, scoops elegantly, and can be adjusted at the straps to sit where it suits you. There is a choice of boxers or briefs for the bottoms, and I would opt for the latter, as they are less likely to ride up awkwardly. £120 at Fruity Booty.
The classic swimsuit
Minimalists will know that Cos always fits the bill when it comes to refined, understated silhouettes, and its swimwear is no different. This swimsuit has a chic contrast trim and a neckline that sits between a square and a scoop. It also features a flattering low back finished with a delicate little tie closure. The best thing about it is its versatility, working just as well for the beach as it would with a pair of tailored trousers in the city. £55 at Cos.
The string bikini
Known and loved for its basics and underwear, M&S has always been a go-to for my swimwear. I love that this triangle bikini has removable padding in the cups and adjustable ties on both the bottoms and the top, making it easy to tweak the fit. Each part is sold separately, so you can mix and match if you wish. £21 at Marks & Spencer.
