Rebecca Ferguson’s First Romantic Comedy Honeymoon/Funeral Finds a US Home at Black Bear

Swedish actress Rebecca Ferguson’s new romantic comedy, Honeymoon/Funeral, will be released in the United States by the independent distributor Black Bear. The company announced on Friday that it had acquired domestic rights to the film. Ferguson stars alongside Greta Lee and Carrie Coon.

The story follows two women who meet on a flight from Los Angeles to London. One is going on her honeymoon alone after her partner called off their wedding, and the other is flying home for her mother’s funeral. The two end up spending the week together. The film is directed by Nahnatchka Khan, a two-time Emmy nominee best known for the sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, from a script by Julia Bicknell, whose credits include Yellowjackets.

Shooting wrapped in London last month and the film is now in post-production. Khan produced it with Jennifer Carreras through their company Fierce Baby, with Bicknell also producing. MRC financed the project and oversaw production, while FilmNation Entertainment is handling worldwide sales. The film launched sales at the first TIFF market in Toronto earlier this year, according to TheWrap.

Katie Anderson, Black Bear’s executive vice president of acquisitions, praised the film as “an original and hilarious story that is deeply human”. She also singled out the performances of its leads and said the company looked forward to working with MRC and FilmNation on the release. No release date has been announced.

The deal adds the film to a busy Black Bear slate that also includes Wicker, a romantic comedy starring Olivia Colman, Peter Dinklage and Ferguson’s fellow Swede Alexander Skarsgård. The distributor is also handling Guy Ritchie’s Wife & Dog with Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins, David Leitch’s Jason Statham Stole My Bike, and Jonah, which reunites the company with Greta Lee. Further titles on the list include A Woman in the Sun, the directing debut of Julia Cox with Renée Zellweger and Sissy Spacek, and Atmosphere, Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s adaptation of the Taylor Jenkins Reid novel. MRC, meanwhile, has backed films such as Knives Out, Saltburn, American Fiction and Wuthering Heights, and has The Only Living Pickpocket in New York and Eloise on the way. For Ferguson, best known to many viewers for action and science fiction roles, the comedy marks a move into lighter territory.
