The stretch between high summer and full autumn is the hardest to dress. You are not ready to pack away everything you love about warm-weather clothes, but sandals and vest tops no longer cut it once the mornings turn cool. The good news is that bridging the two does not mean overhauling your wardrobe.
The simplest trick is layering: shrug a knit over a summer outfit and you can keep wearing it a while longer. But there are more considered ways to find that middle ground, as some of the best-dressed women online are already showing. One swaps the summer-favourite denim mini skirt for a longer, fuller version, warmed up with a long-sleeve tee. Another takes an easy summer look, black linen trousers, a grey tee, flip-flops, and makes it autumn-ready with the simple addition of a trench coat.
That trench is the quiet hero of the whole exercise. It is the piece most suited to this in-between weather, smart enough to lift a casual outfit and light enough that you won’t overheat. Thrown over what you already own, it does most of the seasonal work on its own.
The broader principle is to shift, not replace. Shorts give way to trousers, vests to long-sleeve tees, sandals to covered shoes, but the outfits underneath can stay largely the same. You are adjusting the edges, a longer hem here, a jacket there, rather than starting again.
It is a far cheaper and less wasteful way to move into a new season than buying a whole “autumn wardrobe.” Pull a few transitional pieces to the front of your rail now, and the clothes you loved all summer can carry you well into the colder months.
