Seven SPFs, tested on breakout-prone skin, from an oil-control fluid under £18 to a primer that does two jobs at once.
I have dealt with acne for most of my life, and the upside of that is a very short, very reliable list of products I know my face will accept. Sunscreen sits at the top of it, because SPF is the one thing going on my skin every single day. It also matters more for acne-prone skin than most people realise: daily protection is what keeps the dark spots and hyperpigmentation left behind by a breakout from settling in permanently.
My complexion is far clearer now than it was, but the margin for error is thin. One wrong product and my chin erupts in whiteheads and those painful red bumps that sit under the skin rather than on it. Having spent years getting my routine right, I am genuinely reluctant to gamble on anything new.
What follows is the result of slow, cautious testing. These are the sunscreens that protect my skin without setting it off. Even so, patch test on a small area first, introduce one new product at a time, and give it a fortnight before you decide.
How these were tested
The Marie Claire UK team takes product testing seriously and aims to deliver honest, useful reviews. Each SPF here got a minimum of one week on my face, and several have been in my routine much longer. I judged texture, absorption, any residue left behind, and how each one behaved under makeup, checking through the day for shine and how my skin was generally holding up. At the end of each week I compared congestion and breakout levels against my normal baseline.

Best everyday formula
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Oil Control Fluid SPF 50+ for Oily Blemish-Prone Skin, £17.60 at LookFantastic
La Roche-Posay carried me through the worst of my teenage acne, and it was the first brand that visibly shifted my complexion. I have trusted it ever since. This one is built for oily skin, including skin that is both blemish-prone and sensitive, and it mattifies enough to hold off shine all day. The texture is watery and milky, disappears completely on application, and weighs nothing. What surprises people is that a matte finish this effective doesn’t feel chalky or tight, and it leaves a smooth base for makeup. SPF 50, and an all-rounder.
Best oil control
SkinCeuticals Oil Shield UV Defense Sun Cream SPF 50, £40 at LookFantastic
SkinCeuticals has crept up on me and become a holy grail brand. The pricing is steep, but I have yet to try anything from the line that didn’t justify it. This formula is thicker, closer to a mineral sunscreen in feel, though it blends in easily and leaves no white cast. It sits more matte than the La Roche-Posay both during application and after, without drying me out. My skin isn’t especially oily and it still works for me, but if yours runs oily and acne-prone, this is the one that will make a visible difference. It also holds up in humidity and stops makeup sliding around.
Most affordable
CeraVe Invisible Dry Touch Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50 for Normal to Oily Skin, £17.90 at Boots
Designed with oily skin in mind, though it suits normal skin too and doesn’t mattify to excess. The formula is smooth, milky and light, absorbs fast, and finishes invisibly, so makeup goes on over it without complaint. My favourite thing about it is the niacinamide, which has always been reliable for keeping my breakouts down. Oil stays under control all day and it won’t block pores.
Most hydrating
Aesop Protective Facial Lotion SPF 50, £47 at Space NK
Another niacinamide formula, this time in a lotion that hydrates and nourishes rather than mattifies. This is my recommendation if your skin is tight or uncomfortable, especially if you’re using drying spot treatments overnight. It behaves like an ordinary day moisturiser with sun protection built in, and it doesn’t turn greasy or shiny. Worth flagging: it isn’t fragrance-free, so anyone reactive to fragrance may want to look elsewhere. It has never irritated me or triggered a breakout.
Best for severe acne
Dr Sam’s Flawless Daily Sunscreen SPF 50, £31 at Sephora
If your acne needs careful handling, this is about as safe a bet as sunscreen gets. It is made specifically for blemish-prone skin, applies like a moisturiser, and dries down with a soft-focus, primer-like finish. Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated with niacinamide for brightness. The whole thing is minimalist in the best way, suitable for every skin type, and it lands the balance between real protection and a skin-like finish with no extra shine.
Best SPF primer
Charlotte Tilbury Invisible UV Flawless Poreless Primer, £42 at Sephora
My skin does better with less, particularly during the day. Keeping the layers under my makeup to a minimum is half the reason my acne stays quiet, which is why an SPF 50 primer makes so much sense. It handles priming and sun protection in one step, and adds pollution defence against the stressors that can set off breakouts. There’s a light tint that leaves a soft glow, it feels like nothing on the face, and it hydrates without going shiny, so makeup applies smoothly.
Best lightweight SPF
Beauty Pie Super Healthy Skin Featherlight SPF 50 Sunscreen + Primer, £29 at Beauty Pie
The name does the work here. It is genuinely invisible, watery and light, and takes barely any effort to blend. I have used it for years without a single blemish to blame on it. Non-greasy, doubles as a primer, and finishes skin-like with natural radiance rather than shine. The UV filters also target sunlight-induced inflammation, which takes some of the sting out of red, painful breakouts. No white cast, so it works across skin tones, and it sinks in with minimal effort.
