Zendaya has spent the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour doing what she always does — wearing a run of impeccably styled looks — but this time fans are convinced the clothes are saying something. The theory doing the rounds is that her heavily black wardrobe is a coded hint about her character MJ’s fate in the film, and the internet has run with it.
Zendaya has not shut the idea down. Asked about the speculation, she gave an answer tailor-made to keep it alive: “I think much of the process is about not just showing tribute, but also giving clues, ideas and thoughts.” Director Destin Daniel Cretton played along too, joking that “all the clues” could be found in her outfit choices.
Whether any of it means anything is beside the point. This is exactly the kind of press-tour dressing that has made Zendaya and her longtime stylist a fixation every time she has a film to promote: a parade of sharp, mostly monochrome ensembles that give fans something to decode between trailers. If there is a real clue buried in the styling, she is not telling — and the ambiguity is doing its job.
