How to Repair Summer Sun Damage, According to a Dermatologist

After a summer spent in the sun, a lot of us start to notice the aftermath come September: darker patches of pigmentation, fine lines and uneven texture. It is an unwelcome souvenir of the warm months, but it is also extremely common, and there is plenty you can do to repair and restore the skin.

“Sun damage is one of the most significant threats to skin health, and it impacts the skin in a range of ways,” says Dr Leah Totton, a medical and cosmetic doctor and the founder of Dr Leah Clinics. The catch, she notes, is timing: many of us don’t realise the damage is happening until well after summer, which is why understanding the causes, prevention and repair matters so much for avoiding longer-term problems.

The repair toolkit runs from gentle to more intensive. At the beginner-friendly end are retinol, which supports skin renewal, and SPF moisturisers and foundations that guard against further damage while you treat what’s already there. For more stubborn pigmentation and texture, salon treatments can help accelerate repair. The through-line is consistency rather than any single miracle product.

Prevention still does the heaviest lifting. Daily SPF, worn all year rather than only on holiday, is the most effective way to stop new damage from stacking on top of the old, and it makes everything else you do work better. Treating sun damage without protecting against more of it is a losing battle.

The reassuring part is that sun-damaged skin is not a permanent verdict. With a considered routine, protection first, then targeted repair through retinol, the right SPF products and, where needed, professional treatments, hyperpigmentation, fine lines and uneven texture can genuinely be improved. September is as good a time as any to start.
